§ 74-178. Installation and location of meters, meter remote devices.

  • (a)

    Water meters and remote devices shall be installed by the water division or licensed plumber. The meters shall be installed as close to the service entrance as possible, preferably within three feet of the penetration.

    (b)

    No water meter shall be located in the crawl space or outside pit unless approved by the water superintendent.

    (c)

    No water meter shall be located higher than five feet above the finished floor and shall be horizontal to the floor.

    (d)

    There shall be no connections other than the inlet valve before the city water meter.

    (e)

    Valves shall be installed on the inlet and outlet side of the water meter and within 18 inches of the meter. These valves are the property of and shall be maintained by the owner/occupant. However, the city has the right to operate these valves to work on the meter.

    (f)

    The property owner shall be responsible for any plumbing charges necessary to accommodate the installation of water meters.

    (g)

    The water meter remote device shall be mounted in a location approved by the water superintendent.

    (h)

    There shall be only one city water meter per residential occupancy.

    (i)

    Water meters and remote devices shall be located in such a position so as to afford easy access for inspection, maintenance and reading.

    (j)

    Where two or more city water meters serve the same building, a lock-type shutoff valve suitable for use with a padlock shall be installed ahead of each meter.

    (k)

    All new or remodeled buildings with water meter installation two inches and larger shall provide facilities for in-line testing of the meter and bypasses approved by the water superintendent.
